Thurles

On Monday did did something that I swore I would never do. I spent the day in Thurles. I know - shocking. I was given the grand tour by Rachael Cooke and I was actually very impressed with Thurles. It really exceeded my expectations and I'm even planning on going back soon. There was one question I had that Rachael couldn't answer- I wanted to know if the 'Thurles' text in the logo for the shopping centre is a play on Thurles's connection with the GAA and Tipperary hurling or it it just me looking for double meanings in everything. If you know please leave a comment!

WTF?!

Cobweb Hedge

I was out for a drive last Sunday morning, when I saw that some sections of the hedges appeared to be haunted. Being the nosey type I had to stop for a closer look. What I discovered was: a thick layer of (what looks like) cobweb on the pegwood hedges. The cobweb was absolutely crawling with black maggoty things. It was gross! I've lived in the countryside all of my life but I've never seen anything like this before and neither has anybody else I've asked. So now I'm really curious. This is only effecting the pegwood/spindlewood sections of the hedges. So far I've only seen it on the back roads of South Tipperary. I really want to get more information and Google has let me down on this one.

So if you know please leave me a comment!

Ego Boost

I was checking out the gossip from Twitter when I came across Barry Doyle's update:
"Always knew id mount to something, I've made an #tackfilm: http://en.tackfilm.se/?id=1275348740719RA54"
and obviously I was intrigued, so I clicked the link and was seriously impressed! I wouldn't recommend giving the site access to your web cam (because I'm paranoid like that!) but you should definitely upload a picture and send the video to everyone you know!

Westlife Concert

Westlife Setlist The O2, London, England 2010, Where We Are
I bought my tickets for the Westlife 'Where We Are Tour' months ago, and because June 5th was so far away, I had kinda forgotten about the concert. So as the event draws closer, I've been looking online. I was most interested in seeing the set list. I found the set list for the London performances on setlist.fm. This will be my first time in Croke Park (surprising for a Tipp person!!) and I can't wait!

PLACE4U - Work Placement

I started my Work Placement with PLACE4U last Monday. Even though it's only a week in, I am really enjoying the work! So far I've been updating and promoting the website, photographing and filming the building and I'm also planning a new site redesign. I also had the opportunity to attend an open Forum where the PLACE4U committee presented their progress to the community. The work is varied and interesting. I've had a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to completing the rest of the placement.

Photography

I can't believe that summer is here already. This semester has absolutely flown by. With my Work Placement with Place4u starting on Monday, I decided to catch up on some photography. This is a photo of some flowers in my back garden. Flickr has the rest.

Digital Expression 2010

Here I am with my Photograph at Digital Expression 2010
Digital Expression 2010 was held in Tipperary Institute on Wednesday 31st of March. The exhibition featured work from renowned photographer David Creedon from his exhibition 'Variations on the Pianoforte', including a stunning photograph of Irish musician Laura Izibor. One of the highlights from the exhibition was the Dark Light Film Festival. This was made up of several short films, each more intriguing than the last.
The creativity of the students was well showcased with a haunting black and white exhibition featuring Holycross Abbey, entitled "Saints and Scholars". The open photography competition was judged by photographer and past student Brian Lanigan. Brian commented on the high standard of photography that was submitted by students. The winners were Barry Doyle and Rebecca White. There was a strong multimedia element to the event with animation and video work from second year students also being displayed.
The exhibition will run until May 31st in the Clonmel Campus of Tipperary Institute and is certainly worth a visit.

The Laptop has been sent away to be fixed so I am writing this post on the painfully slow home PC. It will have to be wiped so I hope that I have all of the important saved on my external hard drive. Time will tell I suppose....

Here are some websites that caught my attention over the last couple of days:

Holiday Research

We booked a holiday to Salou a few months back but there had been so much happening that I had pushed it to the back of mind. It only really dawned on me last night that we are heading off on Thursday. While my family and friends had already been to the same area that I'm going to, I hadn't done any of my usual research. I usually would have any trip researched to within an inch of its life, but this time I had nothing. So I took to the internet to gather information.

So obviously my first point of call was to check out my accommodation. I visited the resorts' website to see exactly what facilities were on offer. Not being one to hang around the pool all day I was eager to check out the area around Salou to see what activities were on offer. The resort website didn't offer much information so I had to dig deeper on my own. I visited tourist information sites for the neighbouring towns. This got me further, but I still wasn't satisfied.

From Google Earth I zoomed right in on my accommodation and the surrounding areas. I learned a lot. I had a quick look at Reus airport and was surprised by how small it was. I had a good look at Port Adventura - the rides and more importantly the shops. I checked out how big the towns were and the size of the beaches - as were places that I planned on spending most of my time. Google Earth was an invaluable tool in seeing my destination. A photograph is great to look at but it doesn't really give you any idea of scale.

Thanks to digging around on websites and Google Earth I had a fair idea of what lay in store for me, so naturally I wanted to see what I was in for. By doing simple image searches on Google Images and flickr I was able to get a really good flavour of the town.

Its one thing knowing that something is physically there - to see a picture taken at a particular moment in time, but I wanted to know what ordinary people like me thought of the place. So I paid a visit to Trip Advisor where I read loads of reviews on accommodation, day trips, restaurants, pubs, beaches and most importantly - shopping.

I was really enjoying my research, so I checked a few extra things - the weather, maps of the area - the usual stuff. Wanting to know exactly what was happening in Salou right now I took to Twitter. Using the Search bar I typed in Salou and voila instant access to Salou from my Irish kitchen. This lead me to a really good site where I got even more information. Before I decided to call quits I moseyed over to you tube to watch some videos of the area. While I came across a good few drunken holiday videos, I also found really good ones as well.

All in all after a couple of hours research, I feel quite familiar with the holiday that I have not been on yet. Equipped with such information can only turn a good holiday into a great one.

Here is my Holiday research Checklist.
  • Check out the official websites of the place you are staying and where you hope to visit
  • Check out the areas tourist offices and don't be shy about emailing them for more information as they are always happy to help.
  • Have a look at the area you will be visiting on Google Earth, you will get a better idea of the size of where you are staying and will be able to estimate if a two minute walk to the beach really is two minutes.
  • Take a look at pictures of your destination. don't rely on ones provided by tour company, its their job to show you the good side. Look at Google Images and flickr, which can be very useful for truthful pictures.
  • Go to travel review websites like trip adviser, experiences that other people have had a very useful for finding out the best and worst places to visit.
  • Social Networking websites like Twitter are great for getting a feel for an area, whether you just listen to other peoples comments or you decide to interact with them.
  • Checking the weather in the days leading up to your holiday gives you a better idea of what to pack.

Digital Expressions 2009

OK Digital Expressions happened awhile back but better late than never right? The event was a huge success. Rachael won a prize for her inspiring picture of hand prints and got into the paper. Congrats Rachael! All the images from the event can be found on my flickr, and if you wait long enough, should appear on the top right in the slideshow. Here is a video of myself and Rachael putting put one of the exhibits for the exhibition.

Needless to say we are all looking forward to Digital expression 2010 and will have more information on it closer to the date and of course everybody is welcome.

Long time no see...

So I literally have not posted anything in months, do I feel guilty? The answer would be no. I have plenty of excuses that I could waste time in explaining but instead I am just going to get down to business.

The story so far...
Year one of the Creative Multimedia Degree Programme in Tipperary Institute is over and I am delighted to say that I have passed with flying colours! The news from the class is good and it looks like I will be seeing a lot of familiar faces next year.
So without college broadband I have been offline since the end of the semester. We have been paying for 3 broadband for nearly a year now, but it has never worked on the laptop and was slower than dial up on the home PC. So doing assignments was a nightmare until now. My neighbour decided to cut down her tree's (which were keeping our house in darkness). The result of the felled trees: Kearney family experiences daylight for the first time in years and the broadband magically works on the laptop!! So I'm back online and this time for good.
I turned 19 back in May and got a new camera for my birthday -The Fujifilm s1000FD camera, and so I have been taking pictures like mad. I've been asked to take pictures of Lisronagh village for its community centre and some local landscapes for mass cards. Photography is something that I am really starting to enjoy ans I can't wait to start snapping again. You can check out my new pictures here. Feel free to comment or add me as a contact.

That's all for now,
Fiona

Cherry Blossom

After spending a long morning in Graphic Design I'm not exactly in the mood for serious posting (am I ever?). So I'll keep it short. The morning was spent designing a corporate identity. Everybody in the class has to come up with a design and the best will become the corporate identity for the Centre for Developing Human Potential. Sean and I gave 17 minutes 30 seconds helping Rachael to print her submission don't ask me why we timed it out of boredom more than anything else, I guess.

In a bid to get some fresh air we went for a walk for lunch and game across this Cherry Blossom tree and of course we took loads of pictures some of which are on flickr. An afternoon of Web Dev has brought me closer to completing my assignment. Am about to skip off home now so BYE!

St. Patricks Day

While most Irish people are suffering with hangovers today after the biggest drinking day of the year I find myself looking at yeasterday's pictures. I did not spend St Patricks day at a pub or a parade. I went to the beach. Yes you read correctly, the beach, in the middle of March. But it was actually warm and sunny, a rare event in Ireland. So I decided to make the most of it abnd head off for a walk along Clonea Strand in Dungarvan, Waterford. I took some great pictures with my camera and uploaded them to flickr this morning. Please feel free to leave a comment. I'm off do do some programming now, BYE!

College Desk

Heres the story, I write for a website called mediavirgins.com. I have brilliant fun working on the site but naturally enough I wanted to set up my own personal blog. The only problem was I wasn't sure how to go about doing so. As I was so busy with college work I wasn't bothered with finding out. But a recent trip to the Irish Blog Awards had reminded me of my goal of setting up my own blog. Today in my Web Developemnt class my lecturer showed us how to set up a blog. Yay! But of course me being me I havent the time to post for awhile as I have loads of assignments due soon and an exam on monday (gotta love timing!). So I promise that I will get around to some serious posting but for now I'm gonna keep it light and quick.

If you don't believe that I am busy here is some proof: my desk in college.
